Pécs, the city which has Mediterranean atmosphere and beautiful location, is situated at the side of the Mecsek Hill, in the vicinity of the Hungarian-Croatian border. The more than 200-year old city was called Sopianae in the ancient Roman times and it was the settlement of the Pannónia region.
After the Hungarians conquered the country in 896 AD, Saint Stephen, the first king of Hungary founded the Bishopric of Pécs in 1009 and the city started to develop. The first university of Hungary was founded in Pécs during the reign of Nagy Lajos. It became one the most important cultural and artistic center of the country with the help of Janus Pannonius bishop in the Middle Ages. The city preserves numerous architectural memories from the 150-year period of the Turkish occupation.
The lovely streets of the downtown, the Cathedral with four towers, the Korsós burial vault and the Early Christian Mausoleum, the mosque of Gázi Kászim pasha, the Jakovali Hasszán Mosque, the Zsolnai China Museum, the Vasarely and the Csontváry Museum, the visit of the champagne factory with tasting event and the beauties of the surrounding landscape all attract the tourists.
Going through on the main square and on the pedestrian precinct of Pécs, the visitors can go and see the teeming life of the city from spring to late autumn. The cosy restaurants, cafés, pubs and their gardens with view over the street create an inimitable atmosphere for the city.
Excursions in the surrounding area: The Orfű Lakeland and the Abaliget Stalactite Cave are situated only 8-10 kilometers from Pécs. The Villány Mountain, the wine region of Siklós-Villány and Harkány which is one of the most famous thermal baths of Hungary are located in the vicinity.
