Zalakaros , one of the smallest cities of Hungary is situated about 40 km away from the Lake Balaton, in the vicinity of the south-western frontier, between the Zala hills. The area is surrounded by vineyards, orchards, forests and fishing lakes. The Zalakaros streets and houses are decoreated with beautiful flowers from spring to autumn. It won the title „the city with the most flowers in Hungary” in 2002 and „the flower city of Europe” in 2003.
Zalakaros became world famous in 1962 when the 96°C thermal was discovered during oil drillings. They recognised the thermal water contained sulfur that has not only a curing effect but also helps prevent sicknesses.
The Gránit Thermal Spa is also built here, which as of today has become the 6th most popular spa in Hungary. In the latest years the spa started to develope very quickly when its pool department (thermal pools and Finnish-, aromatic-, light terapy saunas) was renovated.You can find an aqua park with slides, children’s pool, fitness and wellness elements in covered a swimming hall and a modern therapeutic department. During the summer period more than 5000 mq water surface is at the guests’ disposal of which about 1500 mq is covered. The pools are filled with thermal water and the wave pool provide total relaxation for families.
You can find numerous cultural and natural sights in the surrounding area of the Balaton Region: the Kis – Balaton (Small Balaton) Nature Reserve, Fenékpuszta bird ringing station, Kápolnapuszta buffalo reserve and Vörs and Galambok country houses.
