Esztergom is one of the most important towns of the Hungarian history. It was a former royal seat and the capital city of Hungary in the Árpád age (AD 1000 – 1301.). Today Esztergom is a favourite tourist destination and tourist center.
One of the most famous sights and also the symbol of the city, located at the foot of the Pilis mountain is the Primatial Cathedral of Our Lady and St. Adalbert Bishop and Martyr (Nagyboldogasszony és Szent Adalbert prímási főszékesegyház) - called also as Esztergom Basilica - which is one of the masterpieces of the classicist architecture style in Hungary. This is the 3rd largest church in Europe after the St. Peter Basilica in Rome and the Saint Paul Cathedral in London. Its particularity is the largest altar in the world painted on a single piece of canvas - the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary - which is the work of the Italian painter, Michelangelo Grigoletti. There is a beautiful view over the Danube with the Mária Valéria Bridge, the city of Párkány in Slovakia and the surrounding hills from the cupola of the Basilica.
