Mezőkövesd lies 130 km from Budapest and 15 km from Eger, 2 km from the motorway M3 running to the North-Hungarian region. The city is also called as the capital city of Matyóföld (Matyóland) and is situated at the southern foot of the Bükk Mountain, at the meeting point of the Great Plain and Northern Medium Mountain.
“Who is matyó, what is matyó?”
People who lived in Mezőkövesd or in the surrounding area (Tard, Szentistván) from the early years of the XIX. century, was called as matyó. They creat a unique etnographical group and they are famous for their folk art, embroidery and painted furniture. In 1464 King Matthias gave market-town title for the city of Mezőkövesd which supported him in the fight against the Hussites and he also visited the city in 1472 on the day of Saint László. The king remained very popular in the later time that’s why the matyó denomation comes from his name. In the Matyó Museum you can see how these people lived and you can get acquainted with the traditional embroidered, colorful dresses of the matyó people and art craft objects.
The other famous sight of the city is the Zsóry Thermal Bath of 11 hectare with its thermal water. In 1939 they were searching for oil on the land of Zsóry Lajos, one-time member of parliament and during the drill the sulphurous thermal water of 72 °C emerged from 800-meter depth which can be used as drinking and bath cure for rheumatic and joint inflammatory diseases, injuries and other gynaecological problems.
The following pools await those who wish to recreate and refresh in the baths.: two wave bathes (the first one is 50x30 meter with divided area(30-33 °C) and the last one is 50x20 meter (24 °C), a circular pool with the diameter of 64 meter(24 °C), a 7x12 meter thermal pool (37 °C), a divided thermal pool with covered weight bath (38-40°C) and a swimming pool (26 °C).
There are numerous medical treatments and wellness services (mud packing, weight bath, sauna, etc) besides the spa cures available for the visitors.
The agriculture and technique history collection of the Agricultural Machine Museum of Mezőkövesd contains a wide range of devices used in the peasant farm among the others (treshing machine, seed-cleaners) and more than 150 engines (tractors, traction engine and steady engine).
