Szombathely lies in the vicinity of the Austrian border, on the bank of the Gyöngyös stream, where the landscape of the Small Plain change to the hilly landscapes of the feet of the Alps. The city was built for ruins of the ancient Roman Savaria thus you can find numerous Roman ruins. You can also find one of the four largest Isis sanctuaries here. The two-thousand year old buildings attract thousands of tourists for decades. The excavated part of the Amber road, a two thousand-year old famous trade route is also situated next to the palace of the Romkert (Ruin garden).
The Fő tér (main square) is one of the most beautiful baroque squares of Europe, it still preserves its Medieval form. It used to be the place of weekly fairs of Szombathely for centuries. The name of the city is referring to the fact that medieval markets were held on Saturday every week.
Other sights: The Bishop Palace and the belonging Bishop Garden are situated in center, the Cathedral – which is the third largest church of Hungary -, the baroque building of the City Hall, the Szombathely Gallery where you can see a 2500-piece contemporary textile collection besides the pictures.
You can see the tree and bush spieces of mild and cold zones in the Kámon Botanic garden of 27 hectare which lies on the bank of the Gyöngyös stream. It has sights in all year but the most preferred period to visit is May, the rhododenron blooming time. The Vas Museum Village presents the country life and folk architeture of the last two centuries of the region. 43 new building have been rebuilt since the opening of the skanzem.
