Veszprém is situated in the vicinity of the Séd stream, at the meeting point of the three region areas. It’s bordered by the Bakony mountain chains from the north and west, the Bakony hills from south and Veszprém plain from east. The city awaits its tourists a wide range of sights.
The Saint Michael’s Cathedral situated in the castle, was built by the order of Queen Gisela, the wife of Saint Stephen (ruled a.c. 1000-1038). A queen palace was built in the castle thus Veszprém is also called as the queen’s city. The cathedral renovated in Neo-Roman is one of the main buildings of the Trinity Square (Szentháromság Tér).
The other sight of the castle is the late baroque Bishop Palace where you can see many valuable pictures, antiquites and murals. An archives and a library operate here. The Gisella Chapel was built in the early years of the XIII. century for the memory of the queen. It’s one of the oldest chapels in Hungary, which is famous for its apostole murals. According to the legend the nuns living in the Veszprém valley emboidered Queen Gisela’s and maybe also King Stephen’s coronation cloak. The queen also worked on the embrodery of which authentic copy can be seen in the Queen Gisela Museum.
The famous symbol of the city is the Saint Stephen’s valley bridge called also as Viaduct built in 1938 which spans 50 meters high over the Fejes valley. The Kittenberg Kálmán wildlife park which is very famous in Europe, is one of the main sights of the city.
Lookout points: The Fire Tower which was built as a watch-tower than it was renovated. Climbing the staircases a beautiful panorama unfolds before our eyes. There is a beautiful view over the city from the terrace of the building of Hősök kapuja situated at the end of the Király utca (street).
