Visegrád is one of the smallest towns of Hungary. It lies 40 km away from Budapest, in the Danube Bend, on the right bank of the Danube. There was a Roman fortress, Ponte Navata built at the begining of the 4.century which was rebuilt into a castle after the Hungarian conquistadors occupied the country (A.C. 896).
The Citadel standing on the Castle Hill, the hexa-shape Lower Castle, the Salamon Tower, the Royal Palace and the surrounding village were built after the battles with the tartars (A.C. 1242). I t became the official seat of the Hungarian kings in the XIV. Century. Its golden age was under the reign of the Anjou kings, Luxemburgi Zsigmond and I. Matthias. During the Turkish occupation it was damage severely. The excavation of the ruins and the renovation of the buildings were done with various stoppages throughout the years.
The garden and abbey of Grey Friars founded on the place of the royal chapel belonged to the 123x123 meter Royal Palace built in the XIV. Century. After Buda became the royal seat, the Visegrád Palace became the country residence. After the Turkish occupation in 1544, the building was completely destroyed. The restaurated halls and rooms, the kitchen, the garden the joust camp, the exhibitions and other events ( Visegrad International Palace Games) present the once royal court life.
Visegrád and its surrounding area are ideal destinations for nature lovers. The most visited forest school of the country operates here. You can get acquainted with the biodiversity of the forest wildlife by the paths and info boards. You can find also here the Mogyoróhegy wildlife park. Another sight is the Berényi Miklós Botanic Garden where you can see different kind of trees, bushes and flowers.
